Why Buy Cast Iron Cookware?

I love cast iron cookware. It's beautiful. It's durable. You don't need special utensils to cook with it.

The simplest piece to start with is the cast iron skillet. I own one small one and a larger one I inherited from my grandmother. That's a part of the beauty of choosing cast iron. You can hand it down through generations, rather than having to replace it every few years as with many nonstick pans.

And properly seasoned cast iron is nicely nonstick.

There is one small disadvantage - cast iron cookware should never go in the dishwasher. You can ruin the seasoning that makes it nonstick that way. But if you've seasoned it well and clean it promptly, your cookware will clean up quickly.

Cast iron cookware can be good whether you buy new or used. Even antiques can be used so long as it's not cracked. Rust can be removed. Even new it is highly affordable, much cheaper than copper and often cheaper even than the nonstick pans that don't last nearly as well.
